Free Dance

The final phase of competition is the Free Dance, which is four minutes long and worth 50 percent of the final score. Skaters are allowed to choose their own rhythm, music, and choreography. This event is judged with two sets of scores, Technical Merit and Presentation.

As the sport continues to evolve, restrictions have been instigated in order to emphasize the qualities of ballroom dancing rather than those of pair skating. These include duration of separations limited to ten seconds or less, complete stops limited to five seconds or less, and while music may also have a melody, it must contain a rhythm.
