Compulsory Dance

The first round of competition for ice dancers involves two performances. The International Skating Union (ISU) draws four Compulsory Dance rhythms at the beginning of each season. Two rhythms designated for the Four Continents and European Championships are again drawn from the selected four. The remaining two dances will be skated at the World Championships.

Each team performs a program to both chosen rhythms using the music and set patterns as prescribed by the ISU. Each dance is worth 10 percent of the final score, resulting in a combined value of 20 percent. A panel of nine judges rank the Compulsory Dances with two marks, the Technique Mark and the Timing and Expression Mark.
